Medical Treatment

Acute Rhinosinusitis, generally a self limited illness, is treated with antibiotics, decongestants and local measures such as vaporizers, humidifiers, nasal saline irrigation. Chronic Rhinosinusitis, a more protracted illness, is also treated with the above measures. However, the periods of treatment are often longer and more frequent. In addition, if associated allergy exists, antihistamines and nasal steroid sprays are utilized as well as allergy injections at times. Avoidance of known allergens is certainly advisable; however dust and other perennial allergens are difficult to minimize exposure to. In some instances we do prescribe antifungal or other washes for the nose and sinuses. For additional information please review www.sinuspharmacy.com. The overall goal of any combination of medications and allergy treatment is to improve symptoms and enhance quality of life. If we fail to accomplish this goal consideration for surgery is appropriate based on the endoscopic examination and CT findings.
